ECOMMERCE SEO / PRACTICAL GUIDE
Category vs. product pages: where to start
Choose the page by the buying decision. A category supports selection across a range; a product page answers questions about a specific item.
Name the buying decision first
A query that describes a type of product often needs a useful selection. A query with a specific model needs that model's facts and availability. The category and product templates have different jobs even when their keywords overlap.
Write down what the shopper should be able to decide. "Which size fits this use?" can require category guidance; "Does this exact model have the required connector?" belongs with the product. Search observations can test these assignments, but they should not be replaced by a rule that all broad words belong on categories.
Use an ownership matrix
| Customer question | First owner | Supporting content |
|---|---|---|
| Which products fit a small workspace? | Category or useful buying guide | Dimensions and selection criteria |
| Is this model compatible with my device? | Product | Verified compatibility facts |
| Which color or size is in stock? | Product and variant interface | Current variant availability |
| What changes between two models? | Comparison or guide | Comparable product specifications |
Control filters before multiplying pages
A color, size or brand filter can help a visitor without needing a standalone search page. Decide which combinations have a stable purpose and useful inventory. Treat the rest as part of the browsing interface rather than automatically creating a new content assignment.
Google's ecommerce URL guidance explains why inconsistent URL structures and unnecessary parameters can make crawling harder. Keep one URL policy that the platform, navigation and sitemap follow.
Check what happens when stock changes
A temporarily unavailable item and a permanently retired item need different handling. The customer needs an accurate availability state before being encouraged to buy. When a product is retired, decide whether there is a genuine replacement and document the destination.
A category should still be useful when one item leaves the catalog. If its entire purpose disappears with that item, it may be a product-specific page disguised as a category.
Choose a small implementation batch
Start with one representative category and its products. Review internal links, titles and the facts each template supplies. Check the changed pages after release before extending the pattern to the entire catalog.
