INTERNATIONAL SEO / PRACTICAL GUIDE
Planning an English website for several countries
One language does not require one page per country. Create separate versions when a real market difference changes the information a visitor needs.
Start with the offer, not the directory
List the countries a business can genuinely serve and the conditions that differ. Shipping, currency, product availability and contractual terms can change a buying decision. A place name in a heading does not.
If the English offer is the same across markets, a shared page can be the right starting point. Give the visitor clear coverage information rather than creating several nearly identical pages that all lead to the same action.
Map meaningful differences
| Situation | Starting structure | Information required |
|---|---|---|
| Same English offer in several markets | Shared English pages | Real delivery coverage |
| Different availability or terms | Distinct market versions | The specific offer differences |
| Another language is needed | A genuine translated version | Reviewed local-language content |
| No operating presence in a country | No fictional office page | Honest remote-service coverage |
Give alternate versions a real counterpart
Google documents ways to declare language and regional alternates when versions exist. The alternate relationship should point to a corresponding page, not an unrelated homepage. Keep the relationship consistent when a page is added or retired.
A single English page does not need invented alternate versions. Decide the content structure first, then implement the signals that describe it.
Avoid forced assumptions about the visitor
An IP address is an imperfect proxy for language or purchasing needs. A visitor may be traveling, using a network endpoint in another country or looking for an international offer. Make genuine market versions discoverable through visible links.
When a market choice changes prices or conditions, make that consequence explicit. The content should explain the choice rather than quietly showing a different offer without context.
Measure markets without inventing offices
Use market segments where the data supports them. Keep the URL owner stable so a report can distinguish a shared page's performance from the results of a true regional version.
The worksheet asks for an offer difference before a new URL is assigned. If that field stays empty, reconsider whether the extra page helps the visitor.
